Pumpkin season isn’t just for people. With sweet potato, pumpkin and dog-safe peanut butter, you can make a batch of autumn biscuits for your four-legged friend too.

They’re ideal for an occasional treat after an autumn walk or as a homemade Halloween snack.

What you’ll need to make Pumpkin Biscuits

  • 1 cooking pumpkin

  • 1 sweet potato

  • 140g wholewheat flour

  • 140g xylitol-free peanut butter

  • A small pinch of cinnamon

How to make them

Begin by cooking the pumpkin and blending or mashing the flesh into a smooth purée.

Peel and cut the sweet potato into small pieces. Boil until tender, drain, and let cool before mashing.

Place the mashed sweet potato in a bowl with a little pumpkin purée, the peanut butter, flour and cinnamon. Mix everything together until you have a firm dough.

Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface. Use biscuit cutters to create pumpkins, leaves, bones or any other shapes you like.

Arrange the biscuits on a lined baking tray and cook at 200°C for approximately 15–20 minutes. Leave them to cool completely before letting your dog try one.

A few things to remember

Always check the peanut butter label carefully. It must not contain xylitol, also known as birch sugar, because this is highly toxic to dogs.

Homemade biscuits are still treats, so serve them in moderation and adjust your dog’s normal food if necessary. Introduce new ingredients gradually and speak to your vet if your dog has allergies, digestive problems or a health condition.
