Sometimes you want a quick leg-stretcher, and other times you want a proper adventure. Cudmore Grove Country Park, located in East Mersea just a 20 to 30-minute drive south of central Colchester, falls firmly into the second category.
It feels far less like a standard dog walk and much more like a proper family day out. With a gorgeous coastline, massive open spaces, and incredible history, it is a firm favourite for us—though it does require a tiny bit of pre-planning before you set off!
If you're looking to swap the muddy fields for some salty sea air, here is our honest guide to visiting Cudmore Grove.

Crucial Logistics: The Strood & Parking
🌊 Check the Tide Times First!
Because Cudmore Grove is located on Mersea Island, you have to cross The Strood—the tidal causeway connecting the island to the mainland. During certain high spring tides, the road completely floods, cutting the island off for an hour or two. Always check the local tide times online before you leave central Colchester so you don't get stuck on either side!
🚗 Parking & Facilities
There is plenty of dedicated parking on-site, though you do have to pay. It’s run on a pay-and-display or app system, so make sure you're prepared.
A massive bonus for parents and dog walkers is that there are public toilets right by the car park. There is also a small shop/kiosk nearby. However, to be completely honest, in all the years I have been coming here, I think I’ve only ever seen it open once! It's best to pack your own drinks and snacks just in case.
What to Expect: A Paradise for Kids and Canines at Cudmore Grove
🛝 The Play Park & Open Fields
If you have children in tow, the massive adventure play park near the entrance is an absolute showstopper. It’s got plenty to keep kids of all ages entertained before or after the walk.
Surrounding the play area are huge, wide-open grassy fields. These are brilliant for throwing a ball and letting your dog burn off some initial energy before you even hit the coastline.
🏖️ The Dog-Friendly Beach
When you make your way down to the shore, you are treated to a beautiful sand and shingle beach. The absolute best part? Unlike many Essex beaches, Cudmore Grove welcomes dogs all year round with no seasonal summer bans on the shoreline.
Once you hit the beach, you can choose to walk in two different directions along the coast:
Left takes you along the seawall paths looking out toward Brightlingsea.
Right takes you along the beach beneath the dramatic, eroding cliffs (which are famous for ice-age fossils!).
It offers fantastic enrichment for dogs. A few times when we've visited, we have even seen horse riders trotting along the shoreline, which provided some very exciting new scent-tracking for our pup.
Things to Keep in Mind
Zero Weather Shelter: Just like Gosbecks, Cudmore Grove is highly exposed to the elements. On hot summer days, it gets incredibly warm with very little shade, so sunscreen and portable dog bowls are essentials.
The New Year's Peak: While the dog-walking community here is generally lovely and we've never encountered any "rogue" or uncontrolled dogs, it can get exceptionally busy on holidays. We have visited a few times on New Year's Day, and it was the busiest we have ever seen it. Be prepared for crowds if you go on a sunny bank holiday or festive peak day.

The Final Verdict
Cudmore Grove is a spectacular destination if you want to make a day of it. Pack a picnic, load up the kids and the dog, double-check the tide times, and enjoy one of the most reliable year-round coastal walks Essex has to offer!
