2 min read

Christmas is the perfect excuse for a little festive baking—and your dog doesn’t have to miss out. These homemade gingerbread dog biscuits combine apple, ginger and cinnamon to create a dog-friendly seasonal treat.

You could also package a few biscuits as a homemade Christmas gift for your dog’s furry friends.

Ingredients

  • 300g flour

  • 60g smooth, dog-safe peanut butter

  • 1 apple, peeled and grated

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger

  • 1 tablespoon blackstrap molasses or black treacle

  • 120ml water

Method

Preheat your oven to 180°C, or 160°C for a fan oven, and cover a baking tray with baking paper.

Place all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Stir until everything comes together to create a dough.

Lightly flour your worktop and roll out the dough to about half a centimetre thick. Cut out your biscuits using a gingerbread person, Christmas tree or other festive-shaped cutter.

Transfer the biscuits to your prepared tray and bake for about 20 minutes, or until lightly golden.

Allow them to cool completely before offering one to your dog.

Serving and storing your Christmas Gingerbread Biscuits

Keep the finished biscuits in an airtight container in the fridge and use them within one week.

The biscuits are quite large and contain some sugar from the molasses. PDSA recommends no more than one a day for dogs weighing under 10kg or two a day for dogs over 10kg. Treats should account for no more than 10% of your dog’s daily food.

Remember to check that your peanut butter does not contain xylitol, which may also be listed as birch sugar. It is highly toxic to dogs.

If your dog has allergies, a sensitive stomach or an existing health condition, speak to your vet before introducing a new homemade treat.
